What we collect

We collect a limited set of data when you visit the site.

  • Analytics data via Google Analytics 4. Page views, sessions, approximate device information (browser, operating system, screen size), approximate location (typically city-level, derived from IP address and not stored as a precise location), referring URL, and time spent on pages. Google Analytics 4 anonymizes IP addresses by default.
  • Cookies. First-party cookies for site preferences. Third-party cookies for analytics (Google), affiliate tracking (set by retailers when you click outbound product links), and Pinterest (set when you interact with Pinterest pins embedded in articles).
  • Email address. If and when we launch a newsletter, we will collect the email address you submit through the signup form. We do not collect a newsletter address today.
  • No payment information. We do not process purchases. Every product on withthem.com links to a third-party retailer. Payment is collected by that retailer on its own site under its own terms.

Affiliate tracking

withthem.com participates in affiliate programs. When you click an outbound product link, the destination retailer sets its own cookies on your browser to track whether the click results in a purchase. If it does, the retailer reports aggregate commission data to us through the affiliate network. We do not receive your name, address, payment information, or any other personally identifying purchase data. We see counts of clicks, conversions, and commission earned.

The networks and programs we participate in:

Through these networks, the site links to programs including 1-800-Flowers, The Knot Shop, Personalization Mall, Uncommon Goods, Harry & David, Crate & Barrel, Mark and Graham, Anthropologie/BHLDN, and Etsy. Each retailer operates under its own privacy policy on its own site.

FTC affiliate-relationship disclosure. withthem.com earns commissions on qualifying purchases made through links on the site. Recommendations are independent of commission rates. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. A more detailed affiliate disclosure lives at affiliate-disclosure.

Why we collect

  • To improve the site. Analytics tells us which articles readers find useful, which load slowly, and which need a refresh.
  • To measure which content helps readers. Pinterest engagement and on-page behavior show us what to write more of.
  • To attribute affiliate revenue. Commission data is how the site pays for itself.
  • To send the newsletter, once implemented, to subscribers who have opted in.

Who it is shared with

  • Google. Analytics data flows to Google Analytics 4. Google processes this data under its own terms.
  • Affiliate networks and retailers. They see clicks and conversions for the purpose of attributing commission.
  • Pinterest. Pinterest receives engagement data when readers interact with pins or Pinterest-related elements on the site.
  • Email service provider. When the newsletter launches, the provider will process subscriber email addresses for the purpose of sending the newsletter.

We do not sell personal information. We do not share data with advertisers outside the affiliate context described above.
